Sierra Vista, Arizona—During a roundtable meeting at the U.S. southern border to highlight his efforts to help other states combat the border crisis, and announced he would be partnering up with other border states, DeSantis made pro-illegal immigration heads explode by correctly referring to illegal immigrants as “illegal aliens.

Gov. DeSantis was highlighting the recent encounters with illegal aliens that his recently-deployed law enforcement and national guard task force encountered, informing that the team had been able to seize guns, cocaine, drug paraphernalia, and even assisted in the apprehension of a wanted MS-13 gang member

“One of the illegal aliens that our highway patrol encountered was an MS-13 gang member,” said Gov.DeSantis.

The term illegal alien has been widely used and accepted by the US Supreme Court, the federal government, and Republican and Democratic elected officials for decades. Former President Bill Clinton (D) used the term “illegal aliens” during his 1995 State of the Union address.

In April 2021, the Biden Administration tried to put an end to the use of the term, as well as "illegal immigrants,"  by directing the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to “avoid using terminology that might be perceived by others as offensive or otherwise disparaging,” or dehumanizing.

"In an effort to rebuild public trust and reshape our agency’s image, ICE will make efforts to avoid using terminology that might be perceived by others as offensive or otherwise disparaging," ICE Acting Director Tae Johnson said in an email to employees announcing the change.
