Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) joined former White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany on Fox News Tonight to consider the possibilities that the United States faces after the end of Title 42.
According to the Associated Press (AP), Title 42 stems from a 1944 public health law that allows the U.S. government to more quickly curb migration “in the name of protecting public health.”
It was reinstituted by former President Donald Trump during the coronavirus pandemic.
Sen. Rubio stated that once Title 42 officially ends, there will not be this one-time massive influx in migration, but rather just one of many waves of people looking to make their way in through the southern border.
“There's 100,000 people near the border ready to pounce. But I want you to know that there are at least another 500,000 people en route,” stated Sen. Rubio.
“That's what we're getting from our friends in Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia. You've seen a massive surge of people that are moving in that direction. So this is not a one night thing…There are people in transit. They are en route. You've got all these cartels and trafficking networks that are ready to pounce on this and take advantage of it.”
Moreover, Rubio mentioned that it is time for a change to the asylum process that is being taken advantage of.
“Here's the problem. This is a nation that has offered asylum to people for decades. But there comes a point where a process is being abused, and you have to put an end to it. We have to change the criteria for asylum. Right now, people know if you come across the border, and you ask for asylum, you trigger a series of legal procedures that are going to largely, for the most part, let you get released into the country, pending an immigration hearing at some time in the future that many people don't even show up for,” said Rubio.
The Florida Senator also communicated that the pictures that are being released of the mass caravans look like Syria, and not the United States.
“This has the potential to be a cataclysm. Like I said, we've never seen images like this before. What we're about to see over the next few days, I think it's going to lead to all sorts of things that are unanticipated. Migrant centers, uprisings, and riots. Mass migration events are never good,” Rubio concluded.
