Gov. Ron DeSantis has thrown his political "Fists of Fury" against the weird Furry community.
The Greatest Generation endured the horrors of Pearl Harbor, stormed the beaches of Normandy, and stood in bread lines during the Depression. The Baby Boomers waded through the vast expansion of trees and vegetation in Vietnam, saw both JFK and RFK assassinated just a few years apart from each other, and practiced getting under their school desks in case of a nuclear catastrophe.
Generation X saw the effects of crack cocaine hitting the streets, the HIV/AIDS epidemic killing tens of millions, and heightened racial tensions following the desegregation of the American South.
Generation Z has a different fight.
They must deal with the reality that a furry convention in Orlando, Florida is not allowing anyone under 18 to participate due to the Sunshine State’s new law prohibiting children from attending “adult live entertainment.”
Oh, the humanity.
You might ask: what is a furry?
According to Oxford Languages, a furry is “an enthusiast for animal characters with human characteristics, in particular a person who dresses up in costume as such a character or uses one as an avatar online.”
Pink News reports that “at least 70 per cent of the fandom identifies as LGBTQ+,” and that about 25% of the group identifies as “gender diverse.”
The event, Megaplex 2023, decided to not allow those under 18 to participate due to the nature that the event could lead to the sexualization of children.
As Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) held the pen to sign SB 1438, a bill that many think was supposed to target specifically the LGBTQ+ community, he was actually thinking about how he was going to screw over the furry community.
Or worse, both at the same time.
Please do not consider the fact that the furry convention had to change their policies because their convention could’ve led to children witnessing sexual perversion, the fact that Dictator DeSantis isn’t allowing them to do so is draconian, authoritarian, and downright mean.
That’s right, DeSantis is just a big meanie.
"It is our hope that this change is temporary and that we can welcome members of all ages back next year," Megaplex’s statement read. "This decision has been a difficult one, but Megaplex has not forgotten about or abandoned our younger fandom members and is looking into options for events and activities to include all age ranges and their families."
Fox News reports that the 2022 Megaplex schedule showcased events such as “How to Be Queer,” and “Transgender Furs Meet & Greet.”
Dictator DeSantis is double dipping in attacking both the furry community and the LGBTQ+ community.
