Florida Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R) has introduced the Secure the Border Act of 2023. Congressional Republicans have long sought to address concerns at the border, and the bill is a recent effort to do so.

Both Florida and Texas Republicans have been vocal critics of the Biden administration’s handling of the “Border Crisis,” and Rep. Diaz-Balart is now attempting to address the concerns.

In a press release announcing the bill, Diaz-Balart noted that “the crisis at our Southern border is among the gravest threats to U.S. national security in our history,” lamenting that “for the last two years, President Biden and his Administration have entirely neglected the escalating crisis at our border, and their lack of action has ceded all control to narco-terrorist cartels, who are now among the most powerful in deciding who comes into our country and at what price.”

To mitigate this issue regarding the cartels, Florida Rep. Mike Waltz (R) and Texas Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R) have introduced a bill that would allow military use against the cartels. The bill has drawn the ire of Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) while also enlisting the support of President Donald Trump (R).

Diaz-Balart goes on to explain that the Biden Administrations failure to address the concerns has led to numerous issues being exacerbated.

“The unmanageable chaos at our border has overwhelmed our federal agencies and prevented those with legitimate asylum cases, fleeing murderous dictatorships, from having their case heard and considered. In addition to the Biden Administration’s failed border policy, its foreign policy and record of strengthening regimes like Maduro and Castro to continue to destabilize these countries, pushing even more individuals into the United States,” warned Diaz-Balart.

As a result, he argues that “this vicious cycle must end.”

The legislation is now an effort to “take back control of the border.”
