With a presidential campaign announcement just days away, Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) joined The Jenna Ellis Show to discuss a number of issues, including abortion. During the interview, the soon-to-be 2024 presidential candidate doubled down on his pro-life stance after signing the historic 6-week abortion ban in Florida.
The Heart Beat Protection Act has been one of the most aggressive pro-life bills passed among the nation's state legislatures. Despite the measure not being very popular, Governor DeSantis signed the bill into law as a defining piece of the ongoing "culture war" being waged in Florida politics.
Ellis asked the governor on her show about his commitment to pro-life policy heading into the 2024 campaign against his Republican colleagues. DeSantis answered, "The Heart Beat Bill is the detection of the heartbeat of the unborn child that we believe that the child is entitled to legal protection, and that is by far the strongest pro-life protection that Florida has done in our lifetime."
DeSantis, who recently received the Florida Family Policy Council's Wilberforce Award, added, "It joins many other states who have also done that. We think it's really important and a huge win for life."
Critics of the pro-life movement have often called out conservatives for only seeming to care about life before birth, but DeSantis detailed steps that Florida has taken to assist with post-birth necessities for mothers and their newborns. "We've expanded post-partum medical coverage for up to a year."
DeSantis continued, adding, "We also have something that my wife has spearheaded called Hope Florida: A pathway to prosperity, which is really focusing on a lot of vulnerable single moms who just may not have the support system in place."
DeSantis is expected to file formal paperwork with the FEC, is will hold an event to launch his presidential campaign later in the week.
