With the Presidential primary season getting closer by the day, the intraparty attacks are starting to heat up, especially between former President Donald Trump (R) and potential candidate, Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL).
Since former President Trump announced candidacy in November and rumors of a DeSantis campaign launch have only increased, the two politically powerful Florida residents have been at odds.
Trump called out DeSantis’ record on COVID, with CNN reporting that he said “There are Republican governors that did not close their states,” and that “Florida was closed for a long period of time.” He would also describe DeSantis as an “average governor.”
After not responding to any of Trump’s comments for weeks, DeSantis fired back for the first time in a press conference, "I don't know what goes into paying hush money to a porn star to secure silence over some type of alleged affair — I just, I can't speak to that.”
The Floridian was able to sit down with Florida’s Surgeon General, Dr. Joseph Ladapo to address Trump’s comments and their validity in his professional opinion.
“It’s all blubber; one of the things that I’ve learned being a public official that’s different than my prior role as a professor…is that individuals – one strategy is to make stuff up and to make change to what happened and what people think happened,” stated Surgeon General Ladapo.
He would go on to praise Gov. DeSantis’ resolve during the times “of uncertainty” in hopes of ensuring that the cure wasn’t worse than the disease itself.
“Rewatch some of his announcements, and he was very clearly being sensitive to the fact that people were afraid. So, he communicated as compassionately as he could, that we don’t want the cure to be worse than the sickness. And so, (DeSantis said) we’re going to open up, we’re going to get the kids back in school. What happened? He faced tremendous blowback. No one faced anything near the amount of blowback he did.”
He would also state that Trump was “making stuff up” when addressing DeSantis’ approach to COVID.
“He was trying to say that Governor DeSantis was not vanguard and incredibly brave, and yet simultaneously incredibly compassionate to the entirety of the situation while everyone else was singing a completely different tune is just making stuff up, because that’s not what happened.”
