Rubio Warns Trump Arraignment Sets 'New Normal' in Political Prosecution

As former President Donald Trump arrived in New York City for his arraignment on possibly trumped-up (no pun intended) charges, Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) posted another homemade video on his Twitter, where he said, "Today is a bad day and for all of us & we are all going to regret it for a very long time."

Moreover, regardless of how one feels about Trump, Sen Rubio added that "today American politics crosses a line that it's never going to come back from."

"Put aside for a moment whether or not you like Trump or not like him, you're for him or not for him. Today is a bad day for all of us. Today American politics crosses a line that it's never going to come back from. After today, especially in the face of how ridiculous these charges are, after today, every prosecutor in America that wants to make a name for themselves now is going to have permission to go after just someone in the other party," said Sen. Rubio.

He then suggested that any "Republican or conservative prosecutor" has effectively been given a greenlight to go after the Bidens or Clintons, with the point being that the Trump indictment and arraignment "has set a new normal" of politicized prosecution.

"What's going to stop some Republican or conservative prosecutor now from saying, 'Well now I'm going to go after Joe Biden or his family?' Or Bill Clinton, or Hillary Clinton, or Nancy Pelosi, whoever? What's going to stop them? Nothing's going to stop them, because today we've set a new normal. Today we set the new normal that if you really want to take someone down, nothing should stop you. You should be able to manipulate the law in any way you want to charge someone," Rubio continued.

From here, Rubio goes into how "absurd" the charges levied against Trump are since a misdemeanor-level crime whose statute of limitations has expired has been transmogrified into a felony federal election law charge, "built on the testimony of a convicted liar," referring to former Trump "fixer" Michael Cohen, convicted in 2018 for lying to Congress.

"And what really is damaging is that the charges here are absurd. You're talking about a misdemeanor if proven, a misdemeanor that had a statute of limitations that expired. So this prosecutor has decided to link it to a federal charge, an election law charge, that the federal government decided not to pursue. And all of it is built on the testimony of a convicted liar. Of a convicted liar," said Rubio, repeating for emphasis.

Finally, Rubio reiterated that this sets a terrible precedent, calling it "poison to our country," which will "disfigure American politics and put us on a destructive road."

"And so people see this for what it is, it's political. But it's more than just political. It's poison to our country. It will permanently change politics in America forever. We are going to regret this day, whether you like Trump or not, for a very long time. We are setting a new normal. A damaging new normal that is going to disfigure American politics and put us on a destructive new road. We are going to regret this day for a very, very long time," Rubio concluded.
