Over the weekend, President Donald Trump (R) made headlines after announcing on Truth Social that authorities would be arresting him on Tuesday. President Trump warned that he has not been charged with any criminal offenses, and he questioned the nature of his arrest. Since making the announcement, Republicans have come out in support of Trump, questioning the basis of his alleged arrest.

On Truth social, President Trump shared that the “leading Republican candidate and former president of the United States will be arrested on Tuesday of next week.” In response to his alleged arrest on Tuesday, Trump called on supporters to “Protest, take our nation back.”

Republican lawmakers have since released statements, questioning the nature of the arrest and arguing that, should President Trump be arrested on Tuesday, it would be part of a smear campaign to gain votes for the 2024 presidential election.

Taking to social media to share his thoughts, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R) commented, "here we go again - an outrageous abuse of power by radical DA who lets violent criminals walk as he pursues political vengeance against President Trump." "I'm directing relevant committees to immediately investigate if federal funds are being used to subvert our democracy by interfering in elections with politically motivated persecutions," McCarthy added.

Trump is once again seeking the White House, and he has sparked a rivalry against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R), who has not announced that he'll be pursuing a presidential run in 2024, yet.

Harvard Professor Emeritus and legal scholar Alan Dershowitz has also commented on the alleged arrest, calling it a "targeted persecution." Dershowitz believes that Trump will be indicted and convicted in New York City, citing the city's unfair legal system  as the reason behind Trump's conviction.

"In New York, you can indict a ham sandwich. In New York City, you can convict a ham sandwich because the jury pool is so unfair. Even if he's convicted, he can run for president. He can run for president from prison; he can even serve as president from prison.," Dershowitz commented.
