Byron Donalds: Trump Indictment 'Definition of Political Prosecution'

The potential indictment of former President Donald Trump continues to draw controversy.

Just as Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) lambasted Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's "third world tactics," Representative Byron Donalds (R-FL) called the Trump indictment "the definition of a political prosecution" and "another miscarriage of justice."

"What Alvin Bragg is doing is the definition of a political prosecution. The DOJ, FEC, and Alvin Bragg himself previously said there was no 'there' there—why the change now? This is another miscarriage of justice directed at Trump. Enough is enough," Rep. Donalds said.

Speaking with CNN, Rep. Donalds reiterated this sentiment, adding that Bragg is attempting to "shoehorn some legal theory to go get Trump."

"Let's be very clear. What Alvin Bragg and what his office is attempting to do, is use an essentially an investigation that the DOJ looked at, the FEC looked at, they did not bring charges. They said there's nothing really to do with this, they moved on. And he's trying, to quote legal experts, shoehorn some legal theory to go get Trump. That's the essence of political prosecution," said Donalds.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) similarly denounced DA Bragg as a "Soros-funded prosecutor" who ignores everyday crimes in New York while seeking to go after Trump.

"It's important to point out when you're talking about these Soros-funded prosecutors, yes, they may do a high profile politicized prosecution and that's bad but the real victims are ordinary New Yorkers, ordinary Americans and all these different jurisdictions that they get victimized every day because of the reckless political agenda that these Soros DA's bring to their job," Gov. DeSantis said.

Despite this, DA Bragg's office recently responded harshly to GOP attempts to have him testify before Congress, saying they "will not be intimidated" and claim they are simply seeking to uncover the truth.

"We will not be intimidated by attempts to undermine the justice process, nor will we let baseless accusations deter us from fairly applying the law. In every prosecution, we follow the law without fear or favor to uncover the truth. Our skilled, honest and dedicated lawyers remain hard at work," Bragg's office stated.
