With a vote total of 328 to 86, the House of Representatives has passed Florida Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar’s (R) "Denouncing the Horrors of Socialism" Act. The Florida Republican joined House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R) in introducing the resolution.
Earlier this week, Rep. Salazar took to the House floor to give an impassioned speech, calling on her colleagues to support the resolution. After the vote, Rep. Salazar's office issued a press release, expressing disappointment in the Democrats that opposed the resolution. In the press release, Salazar's office states that "this Resolution marked the first time House Democrats have had to take a public position on socialism. Sadly, this has exposed that almost half the Democratic Party refuses to denounce socialism."
In a statement, Rep. Salazar commented that “the passage of this resolution is a victory for anyone in the United States who believes in the power of individual liberty over the oppressive statism of socialism,” adding that the House “sent a strong message to the world that socialism has no home in the United States.”
South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley (R), who's expected to announce a 2024 presidential run later this month, took to social media to comment on the vote.
"86 Democrats voted against a resolution denouncing socialism today," Haley expressed to her followers, adding that "14 voted present."
"When people show you who they really are, believe them," Haley warned.
She went on to express that voting on the resolution should've been simple because "it should be EASY to vote for every member of Congress to denounce socialism."
This week, Haley unveiled that she would be making an announcement on February 15 in Charleston, South Carolina. She will be joined by her family, and political pundits are speculating that she will be announcing her presidential candidacy.
