With President Joe Biden (D) giving his State of the Union Address last night, members of the legislative branch were decisive in giving their thoughts and opinions concerning the event.
Those who responded included Representative Carlos Gimenez (R-FL) who spoke to The Floridian following the President’s speech.
When asked about what he felt was missing, Rep. Gimenez said that he never bought into anything the President was saying and that the speech lacked any room for growth.
“The problem of the President with me is that I never believe what he says, I actually watch what he does. It (the speech) lacked any sense that he was going to change in any way shape or form what his policies are, and we believe his policies are heading America in the wrong direction,” stated Gimenez.
When asked about taxing the rich and getting them to “pay their fair share,” Gimenez said that this is not the way to bring jobs from overseas back into the American economy.
“Well, he says he wants to bring American jobs back and he wants to create manufacturing back to the United States. That’s (the plan to tax the rich) is exactly the opposite in order to incentivize American companies to come back to the United States….so it’s a disincentive.”
Finally, Rep. Gimenez was asked about the Central and South American countries have seen a rise in communism and socialism in recent years. Moreover, the President did not mention any of the nations “in our backyard” for the second year in a row.
“The message it send to our adversaries is that, ‘Hey, Central and South America are ripe for the taking.’ And by the way, you see the influence of Russia and China going in to Central and South America because we lacked the focus to understand that that’s our backyard. That could solve a lot of our problems with our supply chain by bringing companies and bringing manufacturing that could maybe come back to the United States,” said Gimenez.
Tuesday night’s address was the second State of the Union given by President Biden.
