Salazar Reintroduces Resolution Denouncing Socialism

Share

Florida Republicans have been vocal critics of socialism. Florida Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R) has now joined forces with House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R) to reintroduce a resolution denouncing the failures of socialism.

According to a press release from Rep. Salazar’s office, House Concurrent Resolution 9 would denounce “the horrors and failures of socialism.” The resolution was first introduced in 2021.

Rep. Salazar represents Florida’s 27th congressional district, which is home to many exiles from countries such as Cuba and Venezuela. These are countries that have been greatly affected by socialism, and in a statement regarding the resolution, Salazar shares how the political ideology has affected her constituents.

“The district I represent is one that knows the failures of socialism all too well,” she expressed, adding that her “constituents understand firsthand the consequences socialist ideology brought to our continent: misery, oppression, and exile.”

With reintroducing the resolution, Salazar wants to make clear that “socialism fails wherever it has been tried, and we don’t want it here.”

House Majority Leader Scalise also commented on the resolution, explaining that “the natural progression of socialist and communist policies is to a totalitarian state that deprives its citizens of basic freedoms and human rights.” Scalise adds that the American people reject socialism because “they’ve seen the horrors of communism and the tens of millions killed by regimes in China, the Soviet Union, North Korea, and elsewhere.”

Scalise further mentioned that exiles from Russia, China, Cambodia, Cuba, and Venezuela “are a living testament to the barbarity of these socialist regimes and the promise of the American dream.”

The press release emphasizes the need for passing the resolution, expressing that it “would make a bold statement that the People’s House unequivocally denounces this cruel and unjust ideology.” The goal is to ensure that “the United States commits to never begin to normalize the implementation of socialist policies that inevitably lead to economic ruin and political authoritarianism.”
