America celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Florida representatives on both sides of the aisle take to Twitter to do their part in honoring the civil rights leader.
Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL-12) reminds followers that "as we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. today, we remember the challenge he posed to us all, “Life’s most persistent question is- What are you doing for others?” In his honor, may each of us be inspired to find a way to be in service to one another."
Meanwhile, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody says "on #MLKDay, we honor the legacy and service of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a great leader who boldly pursued justice and equality for all. His dream continues to inspire many of us today."
For Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL-19), Dr. King's example is far more personal, as he tweets "today we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and carry on his legacy of equality, justice and freedom. Without his contributions and dedication to civil rights, I may not be standing here serving the greatest nation in the world. I am forever grateful. #MLKDay." Donalds also posts a picture showing King's quote of "our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."
Similarly, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) says "Senator Rubio reflects on Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his work that brought the American people together through the principles enshrined in the Constitution," adding another quote by King. "When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men would be guaranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness," Rubio quotes Dr. King.
Rep. Scott Franklin (R-FL-18) is much briefer in his acknowledgement, simply asking to "please join me in honoring the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.," along with a graphic of King and another quote saying "people fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don't know each other; they don't know each other because they have not communicated with each other."
Rep. Mike Waltz (R-FL-6) shares a story of King in Florida, describing how "Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was denied entry to Monson Motor Lodge, the only place he was arrested in Florida, while in St. Augustine peacefully protesting for civil rights in America. Today, we remember his bravery in the face of hatred. May we follow his courageous footsteps."
Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL-17), like Rep. Franklin, is equally brief. "Today we honor the great civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.!" Steube adds another quote of King's, this one saying "the time is always right to do what is right."
Meanwhile, Rep. Kat Cammack (R-FL-3) celebrates King in person, joining Marion County residents in MLK Jr. Memorial Park in Ocala to lay a wreath. "It was an honor to join dozens of our Marion County neighbors at the Martin Luther King, Jr. wreath laying ceremony at MLK Jr. Memorial Park in Ocala. Such an uplifting program to honor and remember Dr. King’s legacy, his service, and his message," she tweets, along with photos of the event.
Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) says that "each #MLKDay, we honor Martin Luther King Jr.'s life and legacy and learn from his commitment to fighting injustice. May today remind us to stand up for what is right and work tirelessly to ensure every American can live their dream."
Rep. Kathy Castor (D-FL-14) says "on this day when we celebrate the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. let us remember our fight for equal rights socially, politically, and economically for all and recommit to continuing his life’s work. #MartinLutherKingDay," tweeting the entirety of the quote tweeted by Steube.
