Florida-Based Farm Share #1 Food Bank in America

'Tis the season of giving, and few institutions are as giving as food banks. In a period of economic uncertainty, food banks are a sight for sore eyes. Jacksonville-based Farm Share proudly announces it is ranked the number 1 food bank in the United States by 24/7 Wall Street. Its partner Midwest Food Bank ranks at #7, making Florida host to two of the most successful food banks in the country.

This ranking system is based on standards set by Charity Navigator, which acts as a watchdog for non-profits. These categories include Impact and Results, Accountability and Finance, Culture and Community, and lastly Leadership and Adaptability. Both Farm Share and Midwest made high marks in each of these categories.

Farm Share CEO Stephen Shelley says he is "humbled" to earn the #1 spot, adding that "this is a testament to our hard working and mission driven employees." Shelley expresses gratitude Midwest shares its high rank, saying the two "have worked hand in hand to fight food insecurity and respond to statewide disasters such as the COVID-19 pandemic and most recently Hurricane Ian."

Similarly, Midwest Food Bank's CEO Eric Hodel says 2022 proved a challenging year for both charities, "due to inflationary costs that put pressure on households." Hurricane Ian was also a test of their mettle, as their Fort Myers location was close to the devastation. "I am thankful for the MFB’s ability to quickly respond and appreciative of the volunteers and donors who help fuel our mission forward," says Hodel.

With two top ten food banks and 30 straight months of job growth, no wonder Florida is the fastest-growing state in the country.
