Vice President Kamala Harris (D) recently traveled to Florida’s capital city to give remarks commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court abortion decision. Alongside Vice President Harris, State Senate Democratic Minority Leader Lauren Book (D-FL) gave a speech at The Moon, a facility that is usually a music venue and nightclub by night, to a crowd of about 1,500 people according to the Tallahassee Democrat.
Sen. Book, who went public about her personal traumatizing experiences on the state Senate floor during the deliberations of Florida’s 15-week abortion ban, posted some of her speech on Twitter.
“This war has never been about life. It has always been about control. Honored to stand alongside reproductive rights advocates to welcome @VP to Florida yesterday on the 50th anniversary of #RoevWade,” state Book.
Within her speech, Book stated, “We are the last outpost for abortion care in the south, and no one, my friends, is going to save us but ourselves.”
"Right now they may have the votes, but my friends you know we have the voices, and we have the loud clear support of President Biden,” said Book before reiterating her past position that "abortion is healthcare."
Former State Representative Anthony Sabatini (R-FL) questioned Book’s support for abortion rights.
“Why are you so passionate about slaughtering pre-born children," asked Sabatini.
Book was quick to respond to the former state representative.
“Thank you for the question! I am passionate about fighting for women’s rights & freedoms. Is 'pre-born' a new medical term? 🤔 And since we’re asking stupid questions: Why are YOU so passionate about blackface?" quipped Book.
Sabatini once wore "blackface" during high school and has been ridiculed by his political opponent for doing so. Many have labeling Sabatini a racist for his blackface stunt.
Recently, a federal judge declined to suspend the 15-week abortion ban (also known as HB5) while the bill’s validity is argued in court. State Rep. Anna V. Eskamani (D-FL) argues that the "15 week ban was already deemed unconstitutional by a federal judge and yet the people of Florida continue to have their rights stripped away from us." She would also go on to mention that "the impact of this law has been devastating and has forced people to leave the state for abortion care," calling it "inhumane, un-American and the opposite of freedom."
Despite the Supreme Court documents overturning Roe v. Wade leaking in May and the official overturning of the decision happening in late June, the issue still continues to be a gargantuan issue.
