With Christmas behind us and the holiday season is beginning to wrap up, chocolate candy and sweets are all around us and are a staple in our (not necessarily great during the holidays) diets. Because of this, Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) is reminding us that chocolate can be lethal to dogs and at the least can get them very sick.
And while certain weights and sizes of dogs can tolerate different amounts of chocolate, it’s best to just steer clear of the tasty treats for your pets.
“This holiday season, don't forget that chocolate can be toxic to dogs and cats. According to @AVMAvets the level of toxicity varies based on the type of chocolate and the size of your pet, so the safest approach is to consider all chocolate off limits for pets,” tweeted Bilirakis.
According to a report in the journal Vet Record, dogs are more likely to get sick from chocolate during the holidays (four times as much to be exact).
So as we go into the new year and we start to focus on all of our resolutions that we end up abandoning after a month, let’s make sure that we keep our doggos and our puppers safe from M&M’s and give them some well-deserved Scooby snacks instead.
