Gimenez Latest to Demand Mayorkas' Resignation

Share

The crisis on our southern border continues to drag on, and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas continues to be blamed for it, as U.S. Customs and Border Patrol has counted hundreds of thousands of pounds of drugs smuggled in, including enough fentanyl to kill billions.

Nearly one hundred suspected terrorists have been apprehended, and who knows how many more have slipped past. And yet, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas says the border is secure. No surprise, then, that Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-FL-26) has joined a growing number of Republicans demanding Mayorkas' resignation.

"America is less safe with @SecMayorkas in control. Over 5M people have crossed the border illegally - including a record number of suspected terrorists. Fentanyl is the #1 killer of Americans ages 18 - 45 and cartels have taken over the southern border. Mayorkas must resign," Gimenez says in a recent tweet.

This comes shortly after a heated exchange between Mayorkas and fellow Florida Republican Kat Cammack (R-FL-3). During the session, Cammack cites 1.4 million illegal immigrants who have been released into the United States and asks how many are guaranteed not to have criminal records.

Mayorkas does not give a straight answer, instead claiming Cammack's data is inaccurate. Cammack replies she is pulling the numbers directly from Homeland Security's website, while sarcastically saying that "you guys have done this fun re-naming, re-branding thing" regarding the data.

Mayorkas, rather than answer Cammack's question again, takes umbrage at Cammack's usage of the word "fun" to describe enforcement.

As mentioned, Gimenez is the latest to demand Mayorkas' resignation. Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) previously called for it in a scathing statement released in October. Scott says that "the American people have had enough of Alejandro Mayorkas’s lies and failures."

In February, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody likewise says that because of Mayorkas' "refusal to enforce federal laws, including deporting criminals and maintaining order at the border, he has put America and our respective states on the verge of a national security crisis."
