Gov. Ron DeSantis’s (R-FL) crushing 20-point victory over Charlie Crist (D-FL) in Florida's 2022 gubernatorial race sucked all the political oxygen out of the election cycle.
While the DeSantis vs. Crist race was arguably the biggest race in the state, there was another major race that sailed under the radar—the Senate race between Senator Marco Rubio and Rep. Val Demings, where Sen. Rubio defeated Rep. Demings by approximately 16 points.
Not only did he win by a huge margin, but Sen. Rubio did it by being outspent 2-to-1 by Rep. Demings.
Demings' campaign raised a total of $73,285,353.59, while Rubio's campaign raised $39,436,360.33.
And not to downplay the huge win by Gov. DeSantis, but the Florida Governor spent 6 times the amount Crist spent, and defeated him by 20 points, only 3 points more than Rubio’s margin of victory.
It's important to point out that Charlie Crist has now lost a statewide election as a Republican, an Independent, and a Democrat.
In the historic 2010 U.S. Senate race, Rubio and Crist went head-to-head (Crist was an Independent at this time), and Rubio won by 20 points. So, this past Tuesday was not the first time that Crist had lost a statewide election by an enormous amount.
