Wasserman Schultz Continues Push to 'Ban Assault Weapons'

In a recent press release, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) announced her intentions to “Keep working to prevent gun violence.” In doing so, Rep. Wasserman Schultz has introduced two new bills, Jaime’s Law and the School Shooting Safety and Preparedness (SSSP) Act.

These proposals are attempting to find commonsense gun reform which includes background checks for all gun sales (including private ones), closes loopholes, and “ban assault weapons.”

There is no clarification in the press release as to what constitutes an assault weapon.

“Gun violence is a public health crisis that claims far too many lives. Families across America feel its impacts every day. In my own state, Parkland and Orlando suffered horrific mass shootings, stealing dozens of innocent lives, and upending entire communities in its wake,” said Wasserman Schultz. “Democrats just led the way in turning the Safer Communities Act into law, and it will save countless lives. But Republicans still stand in the way of more needed reforms. We must push to get weapons of war off our streets, which means passing common sense reforms, like banning the sale of assault weapons and firearms with high-capacity magazines. We have more work to do until we keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people.”

Jaime’s Law looks to require all purchasers of ammunition to go through a background check just like the process that is necessary to buy the weapon itself.

The SSSP does three things: 1) it looks to define “mass shootings” and “school shootings” at the federal level. 2) it directs different departments of the federal government such as the Department of Education (DOE), the Department of Justice, and Health and Human Services to “annually report on school safety indicators for school shootings,” and 3) it calls on the DOE to have the safety and prevention protocols on hand to ensure proper communication and response plans.

Schultz also supports the Assault Weapons Ban of 2022, which looks to ban “military-style weapons such as AR-15’s and high-capacity ammunition magazines.”

The AR-15 is a semi-automatic weapon.

Schultz will look to defend her seat from challenger Carla Spalding (R) in the general election on November 8^th.
