Yesterday, President Joe Biden (D) made an announcement stating that his administration would be paying tens of thousands of dollars of student loan debt to individuals using taxpayer dollars. Republicans have jeered this decision, while some Democrats have applauded it. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) is not a fan.
Rubio’s challenger in November, Rep. Val Demings (D-FL) supports the President’s decision, with a statement she provided to the Miami Herald.
“I’m the daughter of a maid and janitor and worked my way through college, and you should be able to do the same thing today,” said the former Orlando Chief of Police. “Education is the ladder to the American Dream. Today’s relief is targeted to the middle class, has new reforms to make it easier to work off loans, and will expand opportunity for everyone.”
Sen. Rubio sent out a press release showing his disdain for Demings’ support of the loan forgiveness.
“This is preposterous and proves without a shadow of a doubt that Val Demings will always stand with Joe Biden and her blue-state donors over the interests of Florida families. Millions of Floridians either responsibly paid off their student loans or made the choice not to go to college, and yet the working class will now foot the bill for affluent Americans' college and graduate degrees. Demings is once again showing Floridians that she's nothing more than a radical rubber stamp for Biden's agenda who can't be counted on to represent their interests in Washington,” said Elizabeth Gregory, communications director for Marco Rubio for Senate.
The two candidates basically ran unopposed in their primary elections, focusing all their attention on each other since the very beginning. Demings, running as “Chief Demings” this election cycle rather than Rep. Demings, is looking to dethrone Rubio since winning the seat he has held since 2011.
