While Commissioner of Agriculture Nikki Fried (D-FL) is thought to be the more progressive choice for governor in the Democrat field, Commissioner Fried has taken a step back from her usual rhetoric and has adopted a more moderate approach to gun laws in Florida.
Commissioner Fried has previously rivaled incumbent Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL), on the gun debate. The gubernatorial hopeful has committed to vetoing any Constitutional Carry bills that could come her way as governor if elected. Even just last week, Fried blasted opponent US Rep. Charlie Crist (D-FL) for being pro-gun in the past.
Over the weekend The Floridian had the opportunity to catch up with Fried and ask her some questions about her stance on gun rights, and what she would do as governor in regard to guns.
"First and foremost, I think everyone knows this by now, I have my own concealed weapons permit, I own my own gun, but it's about responsible gun ownership," stated Fried. "Get rid of ghost guns, we've got to make sure that we're doing background checks on ammunition because we also know that bullets kill, not guns," is how Fried intends to enact what she calls, "responsible gun ownership."
However, Fried did confirm that she supports, "assault weapons bans," implying that her administration would consider the move. Fried reaffirmed that as governor, she is not out to take anyone's weapons away from them.
"I'm not looking to take anyone's guns, that is not what I'm saying at all," added Fried.
When asked if she would utilize gubernatorial action to ban assault weapons, Fried gave a resounding, "No," adding, "I, unlike our current governor, respect the balance of power, respect the three branches of government, and certainly not going to step on the other branches.
After the U.S. House of Representatives pass a gun ban measure to keep citizens from buying and obtaining semi-automatic weapons, Fried agreed with the vote.
"To allow assault weapons to be bought and sold by civilians is insane," stated Fried.
