If any of The Floridian's readership frequently drives on Florida's toll roads, you can breathe a bit easier now. On Thursday, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is implementing a new "SunPass Savings" program beginning September 1st. This six-month initiative is estimated to save users $38 million, and DeSantis is calling on the State Legislature to "take necessary action" next year so more Floridians can save toll money.
The way this SunPass Savings program works is that it will give users who make 40 paid transactions a month a 20% monthly credit on their SunPass account, while those who make 80 paid transactions a month will see a 25% monthly credit. Additionally, this applies to two-axle vehicles belonging to any SunPass account holder. Furthermore, the SunPass PRO works with the E-ZPass system and is accepted in 18 states.
According to the press release, the average SunPass user pays $50 a month on toll roads. Thanks to this new system, users will save $60 over the next six months.
DeSantis is quoted as saying, "This program will help frequent SunPass customers keep more money in their pockets during a time of growing inflation."
Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez adds that "This SunPass savings program is going to make the average cost of the daily commute more affordable without having to sacrifice time and efficiency. I want to thank Governor DeSantis and the Florida Department of Transportation for working together to make a real difference for Floridians in the face of rising Bidenflation."
