U.S. Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade Abortion Ruling

The U.S. Supreme Court has overturned the longstanding 1973  Roe v. Wade abortion ruling.

The ruling was expected after a Supreme Court memo was leaked, where Justice Samuel Alito penned the argument to abolish the ruling.

The Court’s decision in the Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization that would allow the state of Mississippi to put in place a 15-week abortion ban, like the one recently signed into law in Florida, was the stroke that banned abortion.

While pro-Life advocates and Conservative Republicans rejoiced, pro-Choice, pro-abortion activists, and elected officials dressed down the Supreme Court decision and the Trump-appointed justices that helped overturn the landmark abortion ruling some 49 years ago.

Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who is arguably one of the state’s loudest proponents of a woman’s right to choose, posted a scathing rebuke to the ruling on social media, calling the ruling “repulsive” and “immoral.”

Rep. Wasserman Schultz said several years ago that abortion would be abolished.

“An extremist Supreme Court majority just turned women’s bodies into government property, forcing pregnancy onto millions of women who now face horrific medical, financial, and emotional harm,” said  Rep. Wasserman Schultz. “It’s a repulsive, immoral decision that erodes women’s constitutional and human rights and shows just how far out of step extremist Republicans and their judicial picks are with most Americans.”

Progressive State Representative Anna Eskamani tweeted that the Supreme Court ruling was a “devastating blow to our collective freedom as women and Americans. And it follows a clear and consistent Republican effort to end the right to abortions.”

Eskamani added, “Abortion is about freedom, options, self-determination, and a free society. This SCOTUS decision completely strips us of our collective freedoms, taking away our power to control our personal decisions and handing it over to politicians”

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Nikki Fried also asserted her support or abortion rights while at the same time taking a jab at her primary opponent, Rep. Charlie Crist, who as a Republican, was pro-life.

The Republicans

As was to be expected, Republican lawmakers were ecstatic over the Supreme Court decision.

Law enforcement agencies across the country expect violent riots to break out as result of the Court decision.
