Roe v. Wade Officially Overturned; FL Politicians React

The final nail has been put in the coffin. Roe v. Wade has officially been overturned as the Supreme Court has declared that abortion is not a Constitutionally protected right. After almost 50 years of federally protected pregnancy termination, the states will now decide how the women in their jurisdictions can or cannot receive an abortion. Lawmakers and prominent political figures around Florida immediately reacted to the news.

It’s not a surprise to anyone that the decision was made. On May 2^nd, a draft striking down Roe was leaked by someone within the Supreme Court and posted to Politico.

Whether the leak was caused by a rogue liberal law clerk (as some have speculated) or it was just an accident, it most likely sealed the fate of the decision. If the Court decided to reverse its decision after the leak, it could’ve tarnished the integrity of the Court forever.

Rep. Val Demings (D-FL) who is looking to challenge Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) for his seat, stated in a tweet that “this is not the end.”

“Just went to the Supreme Court. This is not the end, it is just the beginning. Every man and woman who believes in our right to make our own decisions must join us and stand up for America’s daughters. #Roe”

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) himself stated in a tweet that “the Supreme Court has answered the prayers of millions upon millions of Americans.” And that “Florida will continue to defend its recently-enacted pro-life reforms against state court challenges, will work to expand pro-life protections, and will stand for life by promoting adoption, foster care, and child welfare.”

Rep. Charlie Crist (D-FL), who once said “I am pro-life, I am pro-gun, and I am pro-family, and I am anti-tax and I always have been" is now running against DeSantis and has said that the Governor is “not on the side of women.”

“It’s a gut wrenching day for reproductive freedom in our country. Now, more than ever, we need to fight tirelessly to protect the right to choose against DeSantis’ forthcoming attack.”

While the leak may’ve solidified the decision, it did allow the pro-abortion movement more time to strategize and collect outrage from their constituents.

The 2022 midterms will showcase the people’s feelings about the Supreme Court decision.
