Jared Moskowitz Calls Florida the 'Model' of Gun Control

Share

In Parkland, Florida last weekend, gun control advocates attended a March For Our Lives rally to protest for stricter gun laws in the state.  However, Democratic congressional candidate Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) referred to Florida as, "the model," for gun control.

Just two days prior to the rally, the Democratic-led House of Representatives passed a measure along political party lines to raise the age to 21 to buy a rifle and ban high-capacity magazines.

Moskowitz, who is the former Director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management and current Broward County Commissioner, joined his community in pushing for more restrictive gun laws, while simultaneously crediting Florida Republicans for passing previous gun control legislation.

After the Parkland school shooting that left 17 students and teachers dead, then-Florida Governor Rick Scott and the Republican-led legislature came together to pass and sign into law a "red flag" law to raise the legal age to purchase a rifle like the AR-15 in an attempt to help stop any future shootings like the one that occurred at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School.

"Florida is the model.  We passed it in a Republican Senate, in a Republican House, A+ rated members by the NRA led those chambers and voted for it." Moskowitz told The Floridian, adding, "Rick Scott, not a moderate, signed the bill.  Not one Republican lost their reelection, not one Republican!"

Moskowitz then applied pressure to lawmakers at the federal level in taking action.

"Look, we know people in D.C., it's not about their beliefs, it's about self preservation.  What they should learn from Florida is, they can protect kids, they can give a promise to parents that when you drop your kid off at school you get to pick them up and not have to worry about that.  They can do the right thing, and they'll be fine," added Moskowitz.

Commissioner Moskowitz is currently running for Congress in Florida's 23rd District against a formidable opponent, Vice Mayor Ben Sorensen (D-FL) of Fort Lauderdale.

Moskowitz is currently considered the frontrunner down in District 23 where he has proven to fundraise impressive numbers, well into the six figure range.
