DeSantis Signs Bill Caring for Retired K-9s

Today, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) signed a bill supporting retired law enforcement K-9s. According to his staff’s press release, “The program will help caregivers of retired police dogs pay for veterinary costs of the dogs…The Care for Retired Police Dogs Program will provide a reimbursement of up to $1,500 of the annual veterinary costs associated with caring for a retired police dog. This includes wellness checks, vaccinations, parasite prevention treatments, medications, and emergency care for the animals.”

“In Florida we back the blue, and that includes the K-9s that are often the first to go into a dangerous situation,” said the Florida Governor. “After dedicating their lives to protecting and serving our communities, it is important that we ensure that these K-9s are cared for by providing the resources necessary for handlers or adopters to afford veterinary care.”

In order to qualify, retired service dogs must show valid proof of retirement from the force and that the dog has served 5 or more years, or that the dog has served 3 or more years and was injured while working for law enforcement.

The program is partnered with the nonprofit, Emma Loves K-9s. The founder, Emma Stanford, stated, “As soon as I learned about the lack of funding for retired police dogs, I wanted Emma Loves K-9s to assist their handlers with food and medical expenses,” and she then continued, “The retired dogs have served us and our communities and I believe that they deserve the best possible care.”

Governor DeSantis recognized the signage of the bill on Twitter where he released a statement echoing his statement in the press release.

“I signed legislation today that will provide funding for our retired K-9 officers, so they are well taken care of and repaid for their service. In Florida, we back the blue and that includes our great and loyal K-9s!”
