Trump Surges Past Biden Among Puerto Ricans

Share

New polling from The Puerto Rico Statehood Council surveyed one thousand registered Puerto Rican voters and found some interesting results. Those results are not favorable for Democrats going into the 2022 midterms.

According to the results, only 23 percent of Puerto Ricans believe the United States is moving in the right direction (7% strongly right direction, 16% somewhat right direction). Compare that to a whopping 70% of Puerto Ricans who believe the country is going on the total wrong track. What is most telling, however, is that almost half of the registered voters surveyed believe that the country is currently on the “Strongly Wrong Track” at 48 percent.

52 percent of those surveyed declared that the cost of living and inflation were the most important them. It is not surprising, then, that 63 percent of Puerto Ricans disapprove of President Joe Biden (D) and his administration. At the same time, former President Donald Trump (R) received a 65 percent approval rating from those surveyed.

But perhaps the most important issue to Puerto Ricans has really nothing to do with the Joe Biden’s numbers or Donald Trump.

Only 17 percent of Puerto Ricans believe that remaining a U.S. territory is the best option for Puerto Rico while 62 percent believe that becoming their own state is the best option. A little more than 1 in 10 Puerto Ricans believe that it is best for the island to become its own independent nation.

So, what will the future hold for Puerto Rico?

What kind of voter turnout will they produce in the primary presidential elections in 2024?

If the 2022 midterm election were held today, based on this polling, it would not fare well for them among Puerto Ricans.
