Scott Calls Democratic Letter "slap in the face" to the Venezuelan People

On May 10^th, 18 Democrats in the House wrote a letter to President Joe Biden (D) imploring him to lift the sanctions that have been placed on Venezuela and the Nicolas Maduro regime. Maduro is a socialist leader (called a dictator by some) and has been President since 2013.

The legitimacy of his presidency has been in question since 2019, as the U.S. and many other nations have recognized Juan Guaido as the legitimate president of Venezuela, not Maduro.

Part of the Democrat’s letter states, “We urge you to continue pursuing dialogue with the Venezuelan government and, in support of that process, to consider lifting the broad economic sanctions that have achieved little but the widespread suffering of the Venezuelan people."

"Nicolas Maduro and his allies bear much responsibility for the humanitarian and political crisis in Venezuela. But the policies pursued under the Trump administration not only failed to improve the situation in Venezuela, they significantly exacerbated it," stated the letter.

Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) found the letter to be disrespectful to the people of Venezuela.

“Lifting sanctions on Maduro’s brutal regime is a slap in the face to the brave Venezuelans who are suffering under his dictatorship and will only suffer more as he continues to steal Venezuela’s natural resources for his personal gain," stated Scott.

Venezuela used to be one of the wealthiest countries in South America due to its natural resources. However, due to the nationalization of the oil industry, and the ongoing Maduro-created humanitarian crisis,  the country’s wealth has plummeted and is all but beholden to Russia and China.
