In response to the leaked Roe V. Wade decision, Florida Democrats held a rally over Mother’s Day weekend in support of safeguarding abortion at the federal courthouse in Fort Lauderdale. Democrats in favor of upholding the 50-year judicial precedent are worried that Republicans will completely ban abortion statewide if the Supreme Court decision in the leaked Roe V. Wade draft is upheld.
Earlier in the week, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) went as far as to say that Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is a “sick man.”
“Alito and his band of lying rightwingers are set to overturn the Roe vs. Wade and Casey decisions. If they are successful, it will start vigilantism and abortion nans nationwide. With the sick man in the governor’s mansion, here we can expect the ban here in Florida before the ink on the decision is dried.” said Wasserman Schultz. She would go on mention that “Half of all childbearing age women will lose control of their own body.”
Since the leak, Democrats throughout Florida and around the country have shown their displeasure with the possible outcome. State Rep. Robin Bartleman (D-FL), who spoke at another pro-Choice rally in Fort Lauderdale, and repeated the talking point that abortion was healthcare for millions of women.
“And I’m appealing to my generation. Those of us who took it for granted. We stand on the shoulders of other women and it’s our time now to fight for our daughters and granddaughters…Abortion is healthcare. I cannot say this enough," said Rep. Bartleman
“Abortion is healthcare.” This has been the rallying cry for the Democrats for quite some time now. However, in recent history before the leak, this acclamation mostly has been in regards to campaigning for government-funded abortions. Progressives are fighting to keep abortion itself federally protected. “Abortion is healthcare” no longer appears to be a rallying cry for the pro-Choice lobby, but instead could be more of a cry out for help.
