Broward Police Benevolent Association Endorses Book

State Senator Lauren Book (D) has picked up the Broward County Police Benevolent Association’s endorsement in her reelection bid. Book has had the association’s support since 2016 when she was elected to the state Senate.

Rod Skirvin, the President of the Broward PBA, cited numerous reasons as to why the association was once again supporting Book’s candidacy.

Because of the state’s controversial redistricting measure, Book is now running for District 35 wherein she faces former Broward County Commissioner Barbara Sharief. The district includes large areas of Pembroke Pines and Miramar including parts of Davie, Cooper City, Fort Lauderdale, Southwest Ranches, Weston, and Sunrise.

Skirvin commented that Book has supported the expansion of first responder workers’ compensation coverage, which ensures full mental health benefits for them as a reason for the association’s endorsements. Skirvin also mentioned Books’ efforts to stop human trafficking and other efforts against child sex predators in retaining the association’s support.

In response to the endorsement, Book said that she is “grateful for these brave men and women who run into danger so that we can run from it.”

“I look forward to continuing our work together in Tallahassee, to promote public safety and support hardworking law enforcement workers,” she added.

In 2016, the association praised Book because she "has advocated for the passage of laws to better support survivors of abuse and protect children from predators, including the enactment of the nation's toughest mandatory reporting laws, the creation of child safety zones and the elimination of the Statue of Limitations for prosecution of sexual crimes committed against children."

The association argues that Book continues to play an important role regarding law enforcement's fight against crime victims.

Skirvin called Book the very best candidate in the race, and the endorsement is one of many that Book has received in her reelection campaign, which also includes support from state Senator Tina Polsky (D).
