Since the start of the pandemic just over two years ago, student debt payment has been delayed. For those two years, young people owing money back to the federal government have not been required to pay back their loans, but now that the pandemic is waning, people looking down the barrel of debt in front of them are calling for student loans to be canceled in its entirety.
According to a Forbes article which reports CBS News in saying, “Biden told a group of lawmakers that he was looking at different options to ‘forgive most, if not all, student loan debt.’” This has caused the right to respond with fervency about the proposition.
Rep. Michael Waltz (R-FL) went on Fox Business to discuss this idea.
“As college tuition skyrockets, pouring more federal dollars into the mismanaged higher education industrial complex is exactly the WRONG answer. Help students by bringing down costs! Not giving massive loans to kids that don’t prepare them to work, much less pay back the loans.”
Within the video, Waltz discusses the notion that it’s an insult to those who worked hard and paid off their student loans either immediately or over time. That position would be hard to defend due to the fact that college was much, much cheaper “back in the day,” even adjusting for inflation. But the idea to shift the focus from canceling student debt to lowering the prices of college in the first place is something that almost everyone can agree with.
