Numerous concerns including energy independence, skyrocketing gas prices and inflation have dominated the media heading into the 2022 midterm election. Concerns were exasperated when President Joe Biden (D) argued that all of it stems from President Vladmir Putin and his attack on Ukraine. With Republicans opposing the argument and criticizing the Biden administration, Florida Senator Marco Rubio’s (R) reelection team is now directing criticism at Florida Rep. Val Demings (D), citing her “misleading” attempt to support “Putin’s price hike” as “dishonesty.”
Over the weekend, the Rubio campaign further tied Demings to the Biden administration as political pundits argue that Demings is trying to distance herself from the president. Citing her endorsement from the “pro-Green New Deal League of Conservation Voters PAC,” the campaign argues that Demings has negative contributed to negative economic impacts that the country has been facing. Moreover, there is the issue regarding rising gas prices and the alternative solutions that the Biden administration is exploring, which includes accepting oil from Venezuela and lifting sanctions in order to do so.
The Team pointed to a recent Forbes article that notes “gas prices have been on the rise for weeks – long before Russia’s invasion began,” and “lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have called for the Biden Administration to open up oil and gas drilling in the United States to lessen the nation’s dependence on foreign oil.”
The Biden administration has not announced an intention to do so, and the Rubio campaign further questions why the Demings campaign is attributing rising gas prices to Putin.
Elizabeth Gregory, the communications director for Marco Rubio for Senate, commented that “Val Demings is complicit in the spiking cost of gas, and she’s joined Biden in abdicating responsibility,” adding that “Demings has supported Democrats’ Green New Deal policies every step of the way, including by cosponsoring the $10 trillion Thrive Agenda.”
