Rubio Team Chides Demings' 'Deafening Silence' on Cuba

Florida Senator Marco Rubio’s (R) team is criticizing Florida Rep. Val Demings' (D) "deafening silence" on the upcoming talks between the Biden Administration and the Castro regime.

Earlier this week, Florida Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R) issued a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken regarding an upcoming meeting between White House officials and officials of the Castro regime. Joining her in the effort were Florida Reps. Carlos Gimenez (R) and Mario Diaz Balart (R), who further criticized the Biden administration for not including them in the upcoming conversation.

Responding to the letter issued to Secretary Blinken, Rep. Diaz-Balart called the upcoming meeting an “ill-conceived decision to sit down with the terrorist, totalitarian dictatorship in Cuba.”

Noting that “the Biden Admin has not held any genuine, consequential conversations with our allies & friends in the region regarding the immigration crisis,” Diaz-Balart said that “it’s evident that these talks are NOT about immigration, but instead another way for the Biden Administration to provide concessions and legitimacy to the anti-American, repressive tyranny in Havana.”

Rubio’s team, who’s also been a vocal opponent of the communist dictatorship in Cuba, directed criticism to Demings for not commenting on the upcoming meeting.

Laura Ortiz, the Hispanic Media director for Marco Rubio for Senate, released a statement slamming the Senatorial hopeful, commenting that “as if the Biden Administration’s decision to send members of the administration to Caracas wasn’t enough, today they are sitting down with Havana’s criminal regime.”

Citing that “for months, Marco has warned about how the Cuban dictatorship would use massive illegal immigration as a weapon against our nation,” Ortiz argued that “Val Demings’ deafening silence on this is yet another reminder that she only wades into discussing Latin American issues when politically convenient.”
