FL Democrats Slam DeSantis for Dragging America into 'Pre-Roe Country'

This week, prominent Florida Democrats hosted a public discussion on healthcare where Senator Lori Berman (D-31) slammed Governor DeSantis (R-FL) for dragging America into a "pre-Roe country."

Florida Democratic Party Chair Manny Diaz ignited the event by laying out the progress that President Biden and Democrats have been making through the American Rescue Plan, which Democrats allege lowered healthcare costs for more than 2.7 million Floridians over the last year, and highlighted Republican plans to repeal the Affordable Care Act and raise taxes on more than 40% of Floridians.

Senator Berman and Representative Tracie Davis (D-13) bashed Republicans, accusing them of attempting to prevent medicaid expansion and restrict access to reproductive healthcare.

“Governor DeSantis and Florida Republicans are trying to drag America into a pre-Roe country."  Stated Senator Berman, "These attempts are costly, draconian, and overbearing and will unnecessarily make life worse and raise costs for thousands of women and families in Florida. As we look to November, it is clear that our right to basic reproductive healthcare is under attack and we have to fight back at the ballot box.”

Rep. Davis also added to the theme of attributing Florida's downfalls to Governor Ron DeSantis and blamed him for rising healthcare costs.  Davis stated, "Floridians are worried about simply being able to afford healthcare services and prescription drug costs. Basically, our families are trying to decide whether to pay their healthcare bills or try to put food on the table."

"Meanwhile, Governor DeSantis wants to cut funds for the Department of Children and Families, the Agency for Persons with Disabilities, and the Department of Elder Affairs. But we can thank our President for sending money to the statehouse this year, billions of dollars so we are not cutting funds. This is a pathetic effort by our Governor to target the most vulnerable group of people in our state. DeSantis - shame on you," added Rep. Davis.

These criticisms come after the 2022 legislative session that Senator Lauren Book (D-32) described as "one of the worst," in history.  Democrats were more than unhappy with the passing of several pieces of conservative legislation such as the Parental Rights in Education bill, the Stop Woke Act, and the ban on abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy in particular.
