Florida Voice for the Unborn Demands More Work on HB 5

Share

In this legislative session, the Florida House of Representatives will be hearing a new restriction on abortion in HB 5, a measure that has enraged pro-Abortion Democrats across the state.

The bill would impose a ban on abortion after 15 weeks of conception.

Now, the Florida Voice for the Unborn has not only backed HB 5, but pushes for changes to be made to the bill before it becomes law.

HB 5 successfully made it through its final House committee.  Now, the legislation is on its way to the State House floor and is poised to pass easily.

In response to HB 5 making it to the House for a vote, Florida Voice for the Unborn Executive Director, Andrew Shirvell has suggested three amendments in an attempt to improve the legislation:

"1) adding a provision that authorizes a political subdivision, such as a county or a municipality, to regulate or prohibit abortion in a manner that is at least as stringent as state law; 2) replacing the terms 'fetus' and 'fetal' in the bill with the terms 'unborn child' and 'unborn child's in order to properly acknowledge the humanity of children in the womb; and 3) removing the term 'medical abortion' from the bill and replacing it with the more commonly accepted term 'chemical abortion,' since chemicals - not medicines - are what are contained within abortion pills administered during the first trimester," said Shirvell.

Florida Voice for the Unborn further voiced that they are, "optimistic," that these new proposals make it into the, "final law."

Florida Voice for the Unborn is a Christian, Tallahassee-based lobbying group that focuses on pro-life policies in the state legislature.

Several key figures in Florida politics such as State Rep. Anna Eskamani (D-47) have voiced concerns over the bill, claiming there is, "no such thing as a reasonable abortion ban."
