Florida Rep. Val Demings (D) was recently interviewed on Facing South Florida with Jim DeFede, where she was asked whether or not she would want President Joe Biden (D) to campaign for her Senatorial candidacy. While Demings did not directly say if she would want the President to hit the campaign trail with her, the Rubio campaign is now questioning if Demings is distancing herself from the President amidst his low approval rating.
Before announcing now-Vice President Kamala Harris (D) as his running mate in 2020, Rep.Demings was on the shortlist for Vice President. In 2020, when asked for a response about possibly being picked as then-candidate Biden's running mate, Demings said it would be "an honor."
However, in the recent interview with Jim DeFede, the Rubio campaign is accusing Demings of "refusing to say whether she'd like the President and head of the Democratic Party to come campaign for her in Florida."
DeFede asked Demings if she would like the President to take a trip to the Sunshine State to campaign with her, and Demings responded by saying, "I am running my race, and there will come a time as we get closer, I will look at a list of people who I might want to come down." "I have colleagues in the House of Representatives, Senators, and others who want to be helpful," Demings added, saying that "we'll see what that list looks like."
In response to the interview, Elizabeth Gregory, the communications director for the Rubio campaign, questioned why Demings would not mention the President.
"Former VP Contender Val Demings is once again proving that she'll go wherever the political winds blow," Gregory said, commenting that "Joe Biden's approval rating went down and Demings' enthusiasm for having him campaign with her in Florida went down with it."
