Rubio: Biden Should Use the Diplomacy He Brags About

Share

After days of protests in Cuba that have sent shockwaves across the world, some lawmakers are expressing their disappointment in the response that the Biden administration has taken this week. Reports surfaced that the Biden administration was loosening sanctions against Venezuela, and lawmakers in South Florida are now arguing that the administration should be more pressing on the subject.

Florida Senator Marco Rubio (R) took to Twitter, sharing a video where he details the frustration that the Cuban people are expressing while also voicing that the administration's response was “weak” and that it should “use diplomacy that they brag about.”

Rubio shares a video discussing the matter, and he also criticized Emily Mendrala, the Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs that covers Cuba and regional migration.

“It’s now clear why so far Biden response on Cuba has been so weak,” Rubio began, adding that “the official in charge of it is a staunch supporter of ‘engagement’ with the regime & has been praised by regime media as a member of ‘the band of those who love and create.’”

In a video subsequently posted from his office, the Florida lawmaker expressed that he understands and sympathizes with “the deep sense of frustration in the Cuban exile community.” In order to effectively respond to the issue, Rubio argued that what lawmakers in the United States needed to do was provide “a strong response” that “needs to be a bipartisan issue.”

In short, Rubio called on President Joe Biden (D) to “convene the United Nations, convene the organization of America states in an emergency session, discuss these abuses, pressure or shame the international community into condemning and isolating that regime and pressure them to be prepared to take action to prevent a massacre, a bloodbath.”
