Elvira Salazar Calls for Biden to 'put Politics Aside' on Cuba

Share

Over the past week, the Cuban people have taken to the streets of Cuba to protest the Communist regime. Waves of support have been shared from other countries, and the Maduro regime in Venezuela has even attempted to curb attempts at protests emerging by kidnapping oppositional leaders. In South Florida, protests have also erupted in support of the Cuban people, and lawmakers have commented that a change needs to happen in order for the Cuban people to have a free country.

Over the weekend, Florida Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R) addressed President Joe Biden (D), discussing the political turmoil in Cuba and asking President Biden “to put politics aside and support those fighting for freedom in Cuba.”

In response to the growing protests in Cuba, detractors have argued that the political tension in the country is due to the U.S. embargo on the country. However, Rep. Elvira Salazar disagrees, noting during an interview that “it has nothing to do with the United States embargo, it has nothing to do with vaccines, it has nothing to do with that they want food.” Instead, she responded by saying that “you see the American flags being waved on the streets of Havana while people are getting beaten up and their heads are being cracked open.” She shared that the United States and President Biden need to send a message of “solidarity” to the people of Cuba. In the interview, the Florida lawmaker commented that “this has nothing to do with a political party… It has to do with Americans joining forces in order to help the Cubans that want the same thing we have and we enjoy – freedom, liberty, free-market economy, and the pursuit of happiness.”

Sharing the interview segment on social media, Elvira Salazar discussed that “the Castro dictatorship is massacring the Cuban people.” In turn, “President Biden needs to put politics aside and support those fighting for freedom in Cuba.”
