Earlier this year, Florida Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R) joined a bipartisan effort in the House to introduce the Reinforcing Nicaragua’s Adherence to Conditions for Electoral Reform Act (Renacer Act). The legislation aims “to hold the brutal Ortega regime accountable for their Human Rights abuses and promote democratic elections in November.”

This week, the Florida lawmaker once again voiced her support for the legislation.

On Social Media, Elvira Salazar commented that “the people of Nicaragua are being held hostage by a ruthless, socialist dictator who is doing everything possible to hold onto power.”

Arguing that “the Renacer Act will stop the flow of money that keeps the regime alive, Elvira Salazar called for support “to stand against the corrupt, socialist Ortega regime.”

The legislation was originally introduced in the Senate where it also received support from both sides of the political aisle.

Sharing a series of slides that point out key issues that the legislation would address regarding Nicaragua, the bill “gives. The U.S. the power to coordinate sanctions to stop money flowing into Ortega’s socialist regime,” arguing that “America cannot work or do business with socialist dictators like Ortega who jail political opponents. And rig elections.”

In turn, the Florida lawmaker shared. That. “Unfettered access to American markets is a privilege which should not be granted to dictatorships.”

When the bill was introduced, Elvira Salazar shared a statement, expressing that the dictatorship in Nicaragua “is harassing, persecuting, and repressing the Nicaraguan people to prevent a free and fair presidential election this November.” As a result of this, the lawmakers joined forces “to increase pressure on the Ortega regime and hold them accountable for their heinous actions.”

She vowed to continue fighting, asserting that she would “always stand with brave men and women fighting for freedom, democracy, and Human Rights in Nicaragua!”

Elvira Salazar has faced controversy in the House over her voting record, and Darlene Swaffar, a Trump ally, recently announced that she may be launching a Congressional bid for Elvira Salazar’s seat.
