AFP Asks Murphy to Vote no on Infrastructure Bill

Florida Rep. Stephanie Murphy (D) is facing contention from Americans for Prosperity (AFP) after the group released a mailer urging voters to contact her about not voting for President Joe Biden’s (D) infrastructure bill. The mailer from the Libertarian-leaning advocacy group asks Winter Park residents to “ask Rep. Stephanie Murphy to oppose President Biden’s wasteful $4,000,000,000,000 ‘infrastructure’ proposal.”

In May, the group announced an initiative titled “End Washington Waste: Stop the Spending Spree” with the goal of rallying Americans against the infrastructure proposal while also offering alternatives. The co-chair of the Blue Dog Coalition responded to the group after the first round of mailers were distributed, but the group remains firm in making it clear that Murphy should vote no on the bill.

In early May, Skylar Zander, the AFP-FL state director, released a statement commenting on the initiative, arguing that “President Biden’s infrastructure proposal is a partisan wish list that will cost trillions of dollars, be paid for by historic tax hikes, and do little to improve roads, bridges and airports.”

In response to the mailers, Murphy commented that “as the leader of the fiscally responsible Blue Dog Coalition, I have been a. consistent champion for fiscal discipline, underscoring the threat that excessive deficits and debt pose to our economy, our security, and our children’s future.” Murphy, who faces a Congressional challenger in Florida Rep. Anthony Sabatini (R), also made a distinction between Republicans and Democrats.

“Unlike Congressional Republicans, who voted to dramatically increase the debt by cutting taxes for their wealthy donors, I remain committed to working to secure a bipartisan compromise that invests in our nation’s infrastructure, helps rebuild our economy, and brings good-paying jobs to our community without raising taxes on hardworking middle-class families.”

Still, the advocacy group calls the proposal “reckless,” and it continues to ask for support against the proposal.
