All eyes are on the upcoming 2022 midterm election as both Republicans and Democrats are facing infighting in terms of where the respective parties should be heading ideologically. Since the conclusion of the 2020 general election, the GOP has faced a highly publicized internal brawl, and President Donald Trump (R) has vowed to heavily campaign in favor of “pro-Trump” primary challengers. In response, Florida Senator Rick Scott (R), the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, commented that his focus was to ensuring that incumbents win the election.
After a meeting with the 45th President at Trump Tower on Monday, Scott said that he asked Trump “to help us in where we have incumbents and after the primary help us in the general elections.”
Shortly after Trump’s impeachment trial was over, Scott wrote a letter disavowing the internal war that has taken place in the GOP. “The hour is late, the Democrats are planning to destroy our freedoms, and the threat in front of us is very real,” he wrote, and in an effort to ensure that Republicans expand their ground, he is attempting to enlist the help of Trump.
Informing that the meeting with Trump last about an hour, Scott said that Trump “wants to make sure we get a majority,” and Scott added that this can only happen by supporting the incumbents. “Every time I talk to him, I say the same thing,” the former Governor of Florida assured.
Saying that Trump was “receptive” to the message, Scott felt that Trump endorsing Senator Marco Rubio (R)is an example of that.
However, Trump has been a critic of incumbents like Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski (R) and South Dakota Senator John Thune (R). He has called for South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem (R) to primary Senator Thune, but Scott expects Thune to move forward with reelection despite President Trump’s opposition.
