According to a recent report, Florida Rep. Stephanie Murphy (D) is planning to officially launch her Senatorial bid against Florida Senator Marco Rubio (R). For months, the leader of the Blue Dog Coalition was rumored to be considering a Senatorial bid, but no confirmation had been given. Now, the Senate hopeful could be preparing to execute a Democratic win in a state that saw expanded GOP wins in the 2020 presidential election.
In the 2020 election, President Donald Trump (R) won the Sunshine State by approximately 400,000 votes. A number of Congressional seats also turned red in what was considered upset races. While Democrats did win the Presidency, the party is now focused on expanding control while the GOP is focused on regaining majority in the House and the Senate.
Former Governor of Florida Charlie Crist (D) is hoping to once again become the Governor of Florida, but this time he’d like to lead the state as a Democrat. However, Democrats winning in the state is something Rubio believes will prove to be difficult if lawmakers don’t denounce socialism, and it’s something the Republican Senator argues hasn’t happened.
In early April, Florida State Rep. Carlos G. Smith (D) took issue with CS/HR145 and questioning if socialism “has killed people around the world.”
Rubio took issue with this, saying that “every single Florida Democrat should denounce these ill-informed comments.” He added that he knows “friends and neighbors — who have fled socialist regimes and have lost loved ones due to evil, corrupt socialist dictators.”
Finally, he affirmed that “denying that socialism has taken the lives of countless people worldwide, is to say that the lives of those victims don’t matter.”
In a state with exiles that have fled countries with dictatorships, Rubio called on Democrats to denounce the comments made.
Murphy has not yet responded to the comments.
