Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency for Manatee County as an "imminent" and complete breach of the Piney Point wastewater pond is expected.
"Due to a possible breach of mixed saltwater from the south reservoir at the Piney Point facility, I have declared a State of Emergency for Manatee County to ensure resources are allocated for necessary response & recovery," stated Gov. DeSantis.
According to WFLA, "public safety officials" in Manatee County are calling the breach "imminent" and have expedited the evacuation efforts and all residents of the area threatened have been evacuated as of 2:30 pm Saturday.
"Pumps are running around the clock attempting to remove as much water from the pond as quickly as possible. Every moment the pond goes without a total breach in the barrier lessens the chance of a complete uncontrolled release."
Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried is urging Gov. DeSantis to convene an emergency session of the Florida Cabinet to "discuss a plan to remediation actions."
