Demings Considers Statewide Run, Slams GOP Legislators for 'Spouting Untruths' About Biden

After months of speculation, Florida Rep. Val Demings (D) has not confirmed whether or not she will be making a gubernatorial run. However, in a recent interview with POLITICO, Demings did comment that she’s “seriously considering a statewide run,” adding that “we’ll see what happens.” Similar to Rep. Stephanie Murphy (D), Demings has been speculated to either challenge Governor Ron DeSantis (R) or Senator Marco Rubio (R).

However, after the 2020 election that saw a number of districts change from blue to red along with the state being carried by President Donald Trump (R), commentators are questioning the likelihood of either of those races ending with a Democrat in office. Still, Demings continues to fire back at Republican leadership, slamming Republicans for spreading "untruths" while also praising the controversial Green New Deal that has faced opposition from both sides of the aisle.

On Twitter, the Florida lawmaker criticized GOP members who have commented on the “red meat” scandal.

This week, freshman Rep. Lauren Boebert (R) expressed that “Joe Biden’s climate plan includes cutting 90% of red meat from our diets by 2030,” noting that “they want to limit us to about four pounds a year” before questioning “why doesn’t Joe stay out of my kitchen?”

Demings disregarded the comment as “untruths,” stating that “GOP officials are just blatantly spouting untruths” about President Biden’s “agenda because they know that his real policies (vaccines in arms, checks in pockets, and rebuilding America) are extremely popular.”

President Joe Biden (D) has also had a controversial past with the Green New Deal. While on the campaign trail, he told supporters that he did not support the legislation. However, on his campaign website, he did highlight his support for the legislation. It has received opposition from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D).

With that, pundits are eyeing the effect it will have on Florida’s political landscape and how that could fare for both Republicans and Democrats come 2022. A Demings statewide run for Demings could be problematic for her considering that the majority of Floridians rejected the Democratic Socialist agenda in 2020.
