Last week, with a final vote of 57-43, the Senate did not move forward in convicting President Donald Trump (R) over allegations that he had incited the January 6th riot that took place in the Capitol. Both Florida Senators Marco Rubio (R) and Rick Scott (R) voted against convicting the former President, and Sen. Rubio subsequently released a statement discussing his thoughts as to why he voted for President Trump's acquittal.
Released over the weekend, Rubio explained that “the lead manager admitted… that for the Democrats and their enablers working in the legacy media the purpose of this trial was not to hold the former President accountable.” “The real purpose of this trial was to tar and feather not just the rioters, but anyone who supported the former President and any Senator who refuses to vote to convict,” Rubio added.
In turn, he detailed that he “voted to acquit former President Trump because I will not allow my anger over the criminal attack of January 6th nor the political intimidation from the left to lead me into supporting a dangerous constitutional precedent.”
Calling for lawmakers to move on because “a new President is in the White House and a new Congress has been sworn in,” Rubio commented that Americans should “let history, and if necessary the courts, judge the events of the past.”
For him, lawmakers “should be focused on the serious challenges of the present and preparing our country to confront the serious tests it will face in the future.”
In response to his vote and comments, he has received criticism over Twitter from disgruntled users who have launched attacks on him and the daily Bible verses that the Florida lawmaker shares with his followers.
With criticism mounting over his vote, Rubio has not responded to any criticism, and he has simply just shared a verse from Mark 1:41, which reads “Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him ‘I do will it. Be made clean.’”
