Socialism expected to decide race between Mucarsel-Powell and Gimenez

President Donald Trump and just about every single Republican running for the U.S. Congress in the 2020 election cycle  is campaigning against President Barack Obama’s legacy legislation — The Affordable Care Act (ACA)

The  lone Republican exception is Miami-Dade County mayor and congressional candidate in Florida’s 26^th District, Mayor Carlos Gimenez, who while appearing on Local 10’s “This Week in South Florida” Sunday morning political show, said that he wasn’t “opposed to the ACA.”

“I’m not opposed to the ACA, I support making it better. Many promises were not kept - premiums are too high and Floridians couldn’t keep their own doctor,” said Gimenez. “We need more competition in the market in order to begin fixing the ACA”

Gimenez’s position on the ACA raises eyebrows among Republicans, but it may not hurt him in the swing district that voted in Rep. Mucarsel-Powell by less than 2-percentage points.

The focal point for Republicans this election season is to effectively paint Democrats like Mucarsel-Powell as Socialist Democrats that follows in the footsteps of self-styled congressional  Democratic Socialists, Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Ayanna Pressley, and Ilhan Omar.

The Socialism play is working for Republicans, and in South Florida, especially in  CD 26 where many Cuban-American exiles reside, the message that Democrats are pushing  Socialist agenda similar to the one found in Venezuela could sway just enough votes away from Mucarsel-Powell to defeat her.

The advantage that Gimenez has over Mucarsel-Powell is her voting record.

Mucarsel-Powell is not the moderate or centrist Democrat that ran for congress in 2018. The freshman congresswoman appears to have gone all-in with the current Socialism-lite Democratic Party that supports "Medicare for All." 

Gimenez has already accused Mucarsel-Powell of backing the Ocasio-Cortez's expensive "Green New Deal" that Republicans call a job-killer.

"My opponent is in favor of the Green New Deal and that will destroy our economy," said Gimenez. "If we do what her party wants to do we’ll be hurting poor and middle-class families."

If turnout in Miami-Dade is as high as it's been, and with Democrats struggling to keep pace with Republicans, Mucarsel-Powell could lose her reelection bid by 9 pm tonight.
