Soto Argues Trump has Failed on Immigration Reform

Florida Rep. Darren Soto (D) has launched political jabs at the Trump administration for not doing enough on immigration reform during a Zoom GOTV call with a pro-Israel, pro-Democratic Super PAC.

Earlier in the day, The Floridian took part in a conference call with senior White House officials to discuss the president's newly-minted American Dream Plan, which highlights the administration's economic and social vision for the entire Hispanic community.

One senior White House official  argued that “the president has offered DACA upwards of three times to the Congress and unfortunately the Congress is [sic] not wanted to accept those plans.”

In President Trump’s (R) American Dream Plan, Hispanic-Americans are promised that the Trump administration will “instill policies to add 500,000 Hispanic-owned businesses to the economy,” “increase access to capital for minority-owned businesses through historic support for CDFIs and MDIs, leading to even greater development of Opportunity Zones,” “Create an economic environment that produces more than 2 million new jobs in the Hispanic American community,” “grow pipeline for minority entrepreneurship through opportunities for Federal contracting,” “build upon the historic increases in homeownership to achieve new records,” “empower every family in America with school choice now and streamline the process to increase the number of HSIs” and “resolve Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) with a permanent solution that is both fair and just and benefits all Americans.”

During the aforementioned Zoom call, Rep. Soto stated that “there are stark differences between Trump and Joe Biden” on this issue, expressing that “we would never see families separated at the border under a Biden administration, we wouldn’t see dreamers used as political pawns as we would pass a Dream and Promise Act as we already did out of the House, helping Dreamers to receive temporary protected status and have a pathway to citizenship.”

“Republicans refuse to pass any meaningful immigration bills,” Soto asserted, adding that “or course we would pursue DACA in the next congress as well under President Biden by helping the families of Dreamers and citizens.”

The Trump administration has asked the Democratic-lead House of Representatives to present him with a stand-alone DACA bill, but House Democrats have refrained and have instead pushed a broader immigration reform measure that Rep. Soto and Republican Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart have already put on the table.
