Scott reaffirms support for Trump's temporary immigration ban

With Mexico reporting a significant uptick in COVID-19 cases – surpassing 35,000 case milestones and 3,400 deaths to date – President Donald Trump’s move to shut down the U.S. southern border appears to have been the right move to make.

When Trump decided to shut down the border back in March due to the spread of the coronavirus, Democrats revolted, calling the president a “racist” and “xenophobic,” not to mention accusing him of being anti-immigrant for temporarily suspending immigration.

Florida Senator Rick Scott (R), who is one of Trump’s strongest supporters in the U.S. Senate, agrees with the measure to close down the border.

Sen. Scott’s senate office responded to The Floridian’s request for comment on the matter, saying that while Trump closed down the border in March, the senator himself called for all U.S. borders to be closed to “everyone except American citizens and Legal Permanent Residents.”

“In March, Senator Rick Scott called for the closing of U.S. borders to everyone except American citizens and Legal Permanent Residents in order to protect Americans from the Coronavirus,” said press secretary Sarah Schwirian “He applauds the President’s decision to keep Americans safe.”

The Floridian reached out to members of Florida’s Democratic congressional delegation who were critical of this border-closing position, particularly Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, and Stephanie Murphy, but we have yet to hear back from them.

According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, less than two weeks after Trump’s order went into effect, some 10,000 Mexicans and Central Americans have been “expelled” back to Mexico
