DeSantis says Florida ready to host RNC convention in August

Share

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has confirmed that he is actively trying to the Republican National Committee (RNC) to host their 2020 convention in the Sunshine State, and has already spoken to President Donald Trump, who recently gave North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper (D) a week to figure out if his state would be able to safely host the event later this summer.

Gov. DeSantis told reporters at this press c0nference at a Home Depot store in Boca Raton, Florida that he wanted to host it, and that the state was a natural fit.

“We want to host it. I think late August. We're going to be ready to do that. And obviously, his (Trump) government can tell us what we need to do to make sure it's safe, but I think, I think we should do it,” said DeSantis “It'll be a huge, huge economic boon for the state. And I think that they're losing patience with North Carolina, and if they don't get the answers that at least the state will work with them, then I did they are looking elsewhere.”

DeSantis added that of all the states that have shown interested in hosting the event, Florida is “the most natural landing spot for it,” adding that he believes a decision will be made “within the next week” because “at some point, you got to either pull the trigger or you don’t.”

You would think that DeSantis would stop there, but what wasn’t the case, as the popular first-term governor and staunch Trump supporter pressed his case for hosting the event:

“I also think it's good for Florida if you notice, we may be the home for the Major League Soccer out of Central Florida may be the home for the National Basketball Association I know they're working with, with Disney, I've made clear. We want to have it, we think it's important for the psyche of the state in the country to get sports back online. And so I think that that would be great if you look at the different sports that have happened since the pandemic kid, you have UFC Ultimate Fighting was done in Jacksonville we work with Dana White to get them there, WWE has done their Orlando training site to film their things, including WrestleMania.

“We had two charity golf events in the state of Florida one in Juno Beach and on the beach. The other in-home sound which was on Saturday or Sunday with Tiger Woods, they raised $20 million for COVID relief efforts, and we were happy to have that take place in the state of Florida, and we're also looking to do some racing some NASCAR very soon so I think these are good things and you know I'm looking forward to working with folks who went out and want to get back to work.”

Now North Carolina said that it will “continue working with the RNC to ensure” the event can be held in the safest way possible.

North Carolina is going to have to go above and beyond to impress Trump so that DeSantis and his Cowboy boots stomp on their RNC parade.
