In a time of political turbulence, President Trump and Democrats gained a win for the American people as world leaders reached a deal regarding the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

With this new agreement that has been signed but not ratified, it strengthens the trade deal’s protections for workers.

In response, Florida Rep. Vern Buchanan (R), the lead Republican of the House Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee, released a statement today.

In his statement, Buchanan expressed that “international trade is critical to my home state of Florida, where exports and imports support 2.3 million jobs.”

Buchanan added that “leveling the playing field for Florida and the rest of the nation, as well as increasing access to foreign markets is critical to growing the U.S. economy and creating good-paying jobs.”

Moreover, Buchanan noted that Florida exports over $12 billion worth of goods and services to both Mexico and Canada annually. As well, the United States supports more than 700,000 jobs.

With the passing of the USMCA, the agreement is seen as a move that will update the agreement into the 21st Century, which will see high standard trade deals that will boost the economy by $68 billion and create more than 175,000 new jobs.

The Florida Rep. expressed his support for the new agreement, detailing that “the announcement today marks an important step towards finally updating and modernizing the 25-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement, which supports nearly $1.3 trillion in economic activity and more than 12 million American jobs.”
